Bollywood is reigning in people’s hearts for more than a century now. There is no genre that’s untouched and movies on it not been tried. Indian audience’s major source of entertainment is Hindi movies, and decade after decade the Hindi film fraternity has only got better with the quality of cinema, and creativity that can offer something new and refreshing to the viewers.
Innumerable movies have been made till date, countless hits and flops. But we can’t ignore the fact that although there have been new movies with unique concepts coming up, a race where every filmmaker is wanting to create something new, there are some Bollywood movies that will remain etched in our hearts.
We bring you some of the movies that were major flops at the box-office when released, but were eventually loved by the audience gradually. Many of them even became classics!
1.Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron – The movie released in the year 1983 was one of a kind. It projected sarcasm and satire during those days and perhaps due to that didn’t go down too well immediately, especially then; when the viewers were used to seeing hero like a macho man and a pretty and petite heroine who ended up singing around the trees. But as the days passed by the movie received positive response and gained the momentum. One of the best comedies till date.
2.Pakeezah – The movie took 14 long years for its making and release. Released in the year 1972, the movie was declared a big flop precisely because of the time that got consumed for its release. The story about the two courtesans. Double role of Meena Kumari, who was popularly known as ‘Tragedy Queen.’ This was Meena Kumari’s last film, and at the time of her death she knew the movie was a flop. The movie got immense popularity because of Meena Kumari’s death after its release. Today it is considered as one of the cult classics.
3.Kaagaz Ke Phool – This movie was considered a box-office disaster back in 1959, the year when it got released. The movie was supposedly too ahead of its time talking about the film industry and showed the rise and fall of a film director. The audience of that time couldn’t digest it then. This is considered as the masterpiece by Guru Dutt today.
4.Lamhe – Lamhe was featured as one of the top 10 romantic movies of the century during the occasion the Centenary of Indian Cinema in the year 2013. The movie that shows Sridevi in a double role was directed by Yash Chopra. He even considered this movie as his personal favorite. The movie wasn’t well received by the Indian audience due to its theme that was called incestuous during that time. Later as the time progressed people started accepting such scenarios and movie got the acceptance and love of the audience.
5.Umraao Jaan – Who can forget Rekha in the iconic role as Umraao Jaan? The movie was released in the year 1981 narrating a story about a beautiful courtesan from Lucknow whose life was a tragedy. The two songs – Dil Cheez Kya Hai and Inn Aankhon Ki Masti became extremely popular. The movie which is one of the treasures of Bollywood was a flop then, can you believe?
6.Andaaz Apna Apna – Who doesn’t know about this classic? Who doesn’t know the famous dialogues from the movie? Did you know it was a big flop at the box-office when it was released in 1994? But there was something about the movie that made the audience go back watching it again and again. Not to forget the awesome chemistry between Salman and Aamir.
7.Sholay – Don’t believe it right? Yes, Sholay was also a flop for two weeks after its release, but later things turned around completely, because of the soundtrack and snippets of the dialogues the movie released just at the right time, and the movie never looked back again as we all know!
8.Silsila – The movie was released in the year 1981 that showed a love triangle. The audience couldn’t sink in the story then and hence it became a flop. Later due to an awesome soundtrack, and a good starcast that included – Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri and Rekha the movie got acceptance and love of the viewers. Still unbelievable that it was a flop, right?
9.Agneepath – Now this is the one with Amitabh Bachchan in the main lead that was released in the year 1990. The movie was made after getting an inspiration from Amitabh Bachchan’s father, Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s poem with the same title. The movie tried its hand at new things for eg. Amitabh trying something new with his voice but nothing could work in the favor of the film. It was only after Amitabh Bachchan received the national award for the iconic character – Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, that audience started taking the movie seriously.
10.Dil Se – Released in the year 1998 was again a big flop. The Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Koirala and Priety Zinta Starrer was made by Mani Ratnam. The movie despite being a flop was considered to be the biggest example of Indian Parallel cinema. ‘Dil Se’ was the first movie ever to enter the top 10 UK box-office charts. The movie also won two national awards later.
