Yes, it has been confirmed by the South Indian superstar and filmmaker Kamal Haasan that Shah Rukh Khan has acquired the rights for the remake of 2000 film ‘Hey Ram’. The original film showcased several incidents that led to the death of Mahatma Gandhi. ‘Hey Ram’ has achieved the cult status and is considered to be one of Kamal’s finest films. It was also an official Indian nominee for the Oscars. The star cast of the original film included – Rani Mukherjee, Vasundara, Hema Malini, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni, Vikram Gokhale and Nasser playing significant roles.
‘Hey Ram’ was originally written, directed and co-produced by Kamal Haasan. Shah Rukh Khan played a pivotal role in the film then. Recalling the memories of the film, Kamal Haasan in an interview said “Shah Rukh only got a wristwatch for acting in my film at the time because, by the end of it, I had nothing left in hand. Now, he is the brand ambassador for a watch brand. I am glad that he got the Hindi rights of Hey Ram from Bharat bhai (co-producer Bharat Shah). He should have some memory of the film as he gave his friendship and service for it.”
